If you've been following the Olympics, you've likely noticed a significant shift: elite athletes are increasingly opening up about their use of mental health professionals as part of their performance regimen. You might think, “Well, they’re elite and have access to such resources!” But consider this: a study revealed that 35% of Olympic athletes have struggled with their mental health. And if even a small percentage of the population faces these challenges, what about the countless athletes in our communities and households?
Another recent study highlights that 91% of college students report moderate to high levels of stress, 39% experience moderate to severe anxiety, and 53% face moderate to severe depression. That’s nearly 9 out of 10 students dealing with high stress and about half struggling with significant anxiety or depression. We are in a mental health crisis, and while we can identify various contributing factors, the crucial question remains: What are we going to do about it?
To address this, we need to normalize mental health as an integral part of overall well-being. Just as we exercise our bodies at the gym, we should also train our minds. While high-level athletes are beginning to exemplify and normalize their mental health journeys, we also need advocates within our communities.
This is where you come in. You have the opportunity to be that advocate. Often, clients come to me only after problems have escalated. Imagine if we could proactively learn techniques and tools to navigate life’s challenges, not just in sports but in everyday life. Wouldn’t you want to equip your loved ones with the skills to manage their mental health effectively?
Success in any performance—be it sports, academics, or daily life—depends on mental wellness. Achieving mental wellness involves developing self-awareness, resilience, confidence, emotional regulation, and a positive inner dialogue. These skills not only help in overcoming adversity but also in managing the stress of daily life, leading to a happier, more fulfilling existence.
Ignoring mental wellness is like driving a car without changing the oil or refueling—it’s only a matter of time before you break down. Regular mental health practice, supported by guidance and coaching, is essential. Don’t wait until it’s too late; seek support and practice prevention now.
